Drug plan design should reflect the importance of mental wellness in the workplace
Economic growth in Canada is becoming increasingly reliant on knowledge-based industries. There is a growing importance of mental wellness and supportive corporate cultures.
A company’s drug plan should be designed in a way that supports plan members’ choices and their mental wellness. Not all drugs are formulated equally or work the same way in every patient. For example, generic substitution serves an important role in drug plan designs; however, generic substitution of mental health medications is potentially harmful to patients, costly to plan sponsors and counter to many companies’ mental health initiatives. Insurers, advisors and drug manufacturers need to find a solution.
